Licenses

Trailer license: BE & B96

Caravan, horse trailer or boat trailer: the class you need depends only on the weight.

At a glance

With class B
Trailers up to 750 kg, or heavier as long as the combination weighs at most 3,500 kg
B96
Combination up to 4,250 kg, training without an exam
BE
Trailers up to 3,500 kg, so a combination up to 7,000 kg
Requirement
Class B (or BF17), from 18, or 17 with BF17

Which weight counts?

  • Maximum permitted mass

What matters is the figure in the vehicle documents, not how heavily the trailer happens to be loaded.

How it works

  1. Register

BE has no theory lessons and no theory exam.

  2. Apply

  3. Driving lessons

5 special drives (3 country roads, 1 motorway, 1 night) plus practice lessons, including coupling and uncoupling.

  4. Practical exam

Frequently asked questions

B96 or BE?

If a combination of 4,250 kg is enough, B96 is the quick route without an exam. For heavier trailers you need BE.

Do I need a new first-aid course?

No. If you already hold class B, a current eye test is enough for BE.

Can I do BE together with B?

Yes, the two classes can be combined. Just ask us.
